Biography
Margaret Vickery started composing late in life after retirement from Coventry University. Music has always been an important part of her life and she has been a keen member of several local choirs. Help with composition was given first by Sarah Rodgers and subsequently by Colin Touchin. Margaret’s compositions are in general both tonal and tuneful but with a leaning towards modality and harmonic invention.
In 2003 Songs of Earth and Sky for unaccompanied choir was short listed by spnm and in 2004 Margaret was a finalist in the soundtrack competition run by Channel 4 TV in the West Midlands. In 2005 and 2006 her works were shortlisted by the John Armitage Memorial committee.
Several works have been performed at public or private concerts, including in 2000, Dorset Sketches, a four movement work for string quartet and Pictures in a Landscape for wind orchestra. The Old Water Mill, a short work for recorder orchestra was performed in 2002 and Zodiac Circles, a set of 12 duets for two violins written for two members of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra received its premier at a workshop in 2003. In 2004 the Frascati Trio gave the premier of Contemplation for string trio, also in Bournemouth.
