Douglas Seville, M.A., Ph.D.,
Composer
Douglas Seville took a degree in Music at Huddersfield Polytechnic and went on to study for an M.A. in Composition at Keele University. After gaining experience as a professional musician, instrumental teacher and tutor at Manchester Metropolitan University, he further developed his skills as a composer by studying for a Ph.D. at Birmingham Conservatoire, which was awarded in March, 2004. He also gained Qualified Teacher Status from the University of Glamorgan in 2002 and has been a tutor with the Open College of the Arts for ten years.
His interest and experience as a musician cover both classical and contemporary music as a cellist, and jazz music as a pianist. As a result, his compositions reflect his interest and experience in a wide variety of styles, emphasised by theatricality of performance, a key element in many works. His prolonged involvement in the composition and performance of music theatre works, in which music is used to react against the submissive nature of the formal concert is seen as a personal response to his practical experience. In recent years, his compositions have been performed in Birmingham and London and several new works are scheduled for performance over the next twelve months.
