Other Information

This is a Christmas Musical designed to be staged. It was written in 1987 and first performed that year at New Malden Methodist Church, Surrey. It was also staged at Belle Vue Methodist Church, Shrewsbury in 2014. It is scored for Flute (doubling Piccolo), Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, Drums and Strings. The roles played by the soloists are Adam and Eve (dancers), Mary (soprano), Joseph (tenor), Prophet (Soprano/Mezzo), Angel (soprano), Elizabeth (soprano), Shepherd Girl (soprano) and Three City Gents (Tenor, Baritone and Bass). The production is based on the Biblical accounts of Christmas. It opens with a Prelude representing Creation and the Garden of Eden during which Adam and Eve perform an extensive dance sequence. The Prophet then appears fortelling the birth of the Messiah; the production then moves to a more contemporary setting of the familiar Christmas events as more (or less) depicted in the New Testament. The musical content lasts ca. 1 hour 15 mins. but it is designed to be staged with an interval. Although written as theatre music, the vocal writing is at times operatic in style. The picture on the left shows Mary singing Fly a Dream - a recording of this song is available here. The central picture shows the Angel singing He will be Great and the third picture shows cast members singing the reprise of Streamers from Heaven. A CD of excerpts from the original cast recording is available.
