Adrian Wooliscroft was born in Lichfield in 1952. He began to compose at a young age. In 1970 he entered the Royal Academy of Music, studying composition with Simon Harris and organ with Douglas Hopkins.
Adrian Woolliscroft had his first major performance while still studying at the Royal Academy of Music in 1972 - Metamorphosen, for violin, double-bass, guitar, piano and percussion, conducted by a fellow student at the time, Sir Simon Rattle.
Having graduated from the Academy Adrian studied for a teaching qualification and then took up the post of music teacher at Willesden High School in 1974. In 1981 he became Head of Department at Herries School, Sheffield, and in 1986 moved to his present post at Archbishop Ilsley RC School, Birmingham.
As a full time Head of Music, Adrian is responsible for the running of a large and successful department, both in terms of examination results and extra-curricular activities. The School Choir has gained a national reputation over the years and has been involved on many occasions in radio and television work, notably Songs of Praise in 1995 and 1999. In addition, the School Orchestra, which includes pupils and staff, has music especially written for it by him, as particular needs can be targeted in a way that purchased music cannot.
Major compositions to date include:
1983: The Bitter Truth (settings of WW1 poetry for SATB choir)
1984: Jordanthorpe Dances for concert band
1986: Kaleidoscope for orchestra
1995: A Babe Was Born for SSA choir and Brass Band (first performance: Adrian Boult Hall, Birmingham, by Archbishop Ilsley R.C. School Choir and Birmingham Schools' Brass Band, conducted by Martin Orgill)
1997 Concerto for Brass Band written specially for Birmingham Schools' Brass Band conducted by Martin Orgill (first performance: Adrian Boult Hall, Birmingham)
1999: Two fanfares for BBC Songs of Praise: Children of the New Millennium - AW was responsible for all the musical arrangements for this programme.
Adrian also works extensively in arranging, both within the school situation and outside.
